Workshops advocates for multi-pronged disaster risk management                                    Previous       Next

Roing, May 22:In view of the Lower Dibang Valley district being prone to natural disaster and in a high seismic zone and also various other man-made impediments, Relief, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Department and Essomi Foundation Trust have jointly organized a two day training programme on disaster risk management at Anchal Samiti hall which concluded here yesterday.

Emphasizing on the need to evolve a disaster management with community involvement, the organizers said that mitigating the impact of disaster must be an integral part of the planning. “A pragmatic strategy to meet the challenges caused by natural disaster and reduce the gravity of damages to lives and property through coordinated efforts of all agencies is need of the hour”, said Roing RR & DM, Field Officer, Tana Tage while speaking on the occasion. He also suggested working out a multi pronged strategy for risk management, comprising prevention, preparedness towards reduction and mitigation of massive loses.

Zilla Parishad Chairperson, Dature Muili, in his address as the Chief Guest, said that disaster may be occurred at any time unexpectedly. We need to adopt a multi-dimensional approach involving scientific, social and financial process to reduce disaster vulnerability, he added. Muili also suggested a comprehensive training to all heads of the department and create an intensive awareness campaign down to the grassroots level in regard to disaster management to make the programme more viable and lively. He also urged the NGOs and the department concerned to organize this sort of training programme at the interior and the remote villages.

The district being the hardest hit by the flood and the landslides during monsoon, the people should learn with right kind of awareness to cope with the catastrophe, observed Vijay Swami, a social worker. He also pointed out that Deopani flash flood which occurred in 2004 had compelled the administration to evacuate the affected people of the adjoining areas immediately.

Stressing on preventive measures, resource persons Tana Tage, Terge Sora, Field Officers from Tezu and IFT Secretary Sumo Linggi elaborated overall modus operandi to fight any eventualities through power point presentation and imparted the basic development process of risk management.

ADC Duly Kamduk, district officials, panchayat members and general people participated in the training progarmme.
